What the XM demo gives you

XM's free demo on MT4 or MT5 is one of the gentlest starting points in this list, mostly because XM's whole proposition is aimed at people who have never traded: micro lots, a very low live minimum, and a large library of free education. No deposit is needed, prices are live, and you can pick which MetaTrader version to learn on.

How to open a XM demo account

  1. 1

Register a demo and choose MT4 or MT5

If you have no reason to prefer one, take MT5 — it has more timeframes and a built-in economic calendar. Choose MT4 only if a tutorial or tool you plan to use requires it.

  2. 2

Pick the same account type you would open live

XM's standard and raw-style accounts price completely differently. A demo on a raw account will show spreads you will not get on a standard account, so match the type to your real intention.

  3. 3

Set the virtual balance to your real first deposit

XM's live minimum can be as low as a few dollars, which makes an inflated demo balance especially misleading. If you plan to start with $50, practise with $50.

  4. 4

Trade micro lots and read the contract specification

Micro lots — 0.01 — are the reason XM suits beginners. Right-click the instrument in MetaTrader and open its specification to see contract size, swap rates and the minimum stop distance. This is the single most useful screen in MetaTrader and almost nobody opens it.

  5. 5

Watch the free webinars with the demo open beside them

XM's education is a genuine advantage, and its value is in applying it immediately. Place the trade the webinar describes on the demo as you watch, so the lesson becomes a habit rather than a note.

What this demo cannot teach you

A demo is the cheapest tuition available, and it has blind spots that matter. These are the ones specific to XM:

  • XM appears on some regulators' alert lists, including India's RBI. A demo tells you nothing about whether you may legally fund an account.
  • Standard-account spreads are not the tightest available, and a demo makes that cost feel abstract.
  • Withdrawal speed. A demo has no cashier, so it cannot tell you how long real money takes to come back.
  • Slippage in fast markets. Demo servers usually fill you at the price you clicked; live ones do not, especially around economic releases.
  • Your own behaviour under real loss. Virtual money does not produce the impulse to widen a stop or double down, which is what actually empties accounts.

Why XM's demo suits a genuine beginner

Two things make it a good first demo. First, micro lots mean the smallest position you can open is genuinely small, so the gap between practice and a realistically-sized live account is narrow. Second, the education is extensive and free, and unlike most broker content it is not purely a funnel to a deposit. The combination means you can spend a month learning the mechanics — order types, stop placement, what a contract specification says — without ever being pushed to fund. That month is the highest-value thing on offer here.

MT4 or MT5 on an XM demo

XM offers both, and since demos are free you can open one of each and stop guessing. MT5 gives you 21 timeframes against MT4's 9, depth of market and a built-in calendar. MT4 has more third-party indicators and expert advisors, and more tutorials whose screenshots match your screen. They are not compatible with each other, so an MT4 tool will not run on MT5. For trading forex and gold as a beginner, either is fine.

Entity, availability and the inactivity fee

XM Group includes CySEC- and ASIC-licensed entities plus others serving markets those licences do not cover, and the entity on your account documents is the one that matters. Availability is not universal — the Philippines was dropped following SEC action, and XM sits on India's RBI alert list. On live accounts there is also an inactivity fee after a dormant period, so if you stop trading, withdraw the remaining balance rather than leaving it.

XM demo: quick answers

Is the XM demo account free?

Yes. XM's demo on MT4 or MT5 is free, requires no deposit and no card, and uses virtual money at live market prices.

How do I open an XM demo account?

Register a demo on XM's site, choose MT4 or MT5 and an account type, set a virtual balance, then log in on the platform or the XM app with the server and credentials XM emails you.

Can I get an XM demo account on MT5?

Yes. XM offers demos on both MT4 and MT5, and since they cost nothing you can open one of each and decide which platform you prefer.

Does the XM demo account expire?

Demos are commonly archived after a sustained period of inactivity. Logging in occasionally keeps yours active, and creating a new one is free.

How much do I need to open a live XM account?

The minimum can be as low as a few dollars, which is unusually accessible. That is still real money, and micro lots exist so you can keep the position size proportionate to it.
