What the IC Markets demo gives you

IC Markets' free demo is the one to open if what you care about is execution cost and automated trading. Demos are available on MT4, MT5 and cTrader, and the raw-spread account type is the reason people come — but a demo is also where you find out that a raw spread plus commission is not automatically cheaper for the way you trade.

How to open a IC Markets demo account

  1. 1

Create a demo on the raw-spread account type

That is IC Markets' actual product. A demo on a standard account will not show you the pricing structure you came for.

  2. 2

Work out your all-in cost per round turn

Raw accounts show a near-zero spread and charge commission per lot. Take the spread you see plus the commission both ways, at the lot size you actually trade, and write down one number. That is the figure to compare against every other broker — not the spread.

  3. 3

    Compare cTrader against MetaTrader

cTrader shows depth of market and handles orders differently from MetaTrader, and many cost-focused traders end up preferring it. Both demos are free, so run them side by side for a week.

  4. 4

Backtest and then forward-test any expert advisor

If algorithmic trading is why you are here, use MT5's strategy tester, then run the EA on the demo through at least one losing month. An EA that only performs on a 0.0-pip demo spread does not perform.

  5. 5

Check your entity permits automation before funding

Ask support in writing which entity would hold your account and whether expert advisors and VPS hosting are allowed there. Marketing pages that say EAs are supported are not statements about your specific entity.

What this demo cannot teach you

A demo is the cheapest tuition available, and it has blind spots that matter. These are the ones specific to IC Markets:

  • IC Markets has been on Malaysia's SC investor alert list since 2021. A demo says nothing about whether you can legally fund an account where you live.
  • Demo fills are cleaner than live ECN fills, so a latency-sensitive strategy will look better in practice than in production.
  • Withdrawal speed. A demo has no cashier, so it cannot tell you how long real money takes to come back.
  • Slippage in fast markets. Demo servers usually fill you at the price you clicked; live ones do not, especially around economic releases.
  • Your own behaviour under real loss. Virtual money does not produce the impulse to widen a stop or double down, which is what actually empties accounts.

Raw spread plus commission is not automatically cheaper

This is the most useful thing an IC Markets demo can teach you, and it runs against the marketing. A raw account with commission beats a wider commission-free spread when you trade in size or frequently; for someone trading a micro lot twice a week, the difference is negligible and the higher minimum deposit is not worth it. Work out total cost per standard lot round turn on the demo, compare it to a standard account elsewhere at your real size, and let the arithmetic decide rather than the account name.

Why this demo suits algo traders specifically

Deep liquidity, raw pricing and support for expert advisors make IC Markets a common choice for automated strategies, and the demo is where that work belongs. MT5's strategy tester will backtest against historical data, but a backtest is not evidence — most published EAs are curve-fitted and collapse on live spreads and slippage. Forward-testing on a demo across a losing month is the cheapest way to find that out. Just remember demo execution flatters latency-sensitive strategies.

The higher minimum makes the demo more valuable

IC Markets' minimum deposit is around $200, well above XM's or Exness's. That raises the cost of finding out the platform does not suit you, which is exactly why the free demo matters more here than at a $5-minimum broker. Spend real time on it: this broker is better suited to traders who are past the absolute-beginner stage, and the demo is where you honestly assess whether you are.

IC Markets demo: quick answers

Is the IC Markets demo account free?

Yes. Demos on MT4, MT5 and cTrader are free, require no deposit, and use live prices with virtual money.

How do I open an IC Markets demo?

Register a demo on IC Markets' site, choose your platform and the raw-spread account type, set a virtual balance, then log in with the credentials emailed to you.

Does the IC Markets demo expire?

MetaTrader demos commonly expire after a period of inactivity, while cTrader demos tend to last longer. Logging in periodically keeps yours active and creating a new one is free.

Can I test expert advisors on an IC Markets demo?

Yes, and you should — through a losing month, not just a winning backtest. Also confirm with support that the entity which would hold your live account permits automation and offers VPS hosting.

Is IC Markets good for beginners?

Less so than XM or Capital.com. The raw-spread pricing and $200-ish minimum suit active traders, and the platforms assume some familiarity. The demo is free, so it is a fair place to find out where you stand.
