What the eToro demo gives you

eToro's demo is called the Virtual Portfolio, and it sits inside the same app as your real account with a toggle between the two. It is credited with a large virtual balance and is the only sensible way to test the thing eToro is actually known for: CopyTrader. You can copy a real trader with virtual money for weeks and compare what you get to what their profile advertises.

How to open a eToro demo account

   Create an account and switch to Virtual Portfolio

   Register, then find the Real / Virtual switch in the portfolio view. Everything after that point happens with virtual money until you switch back.

   Reset the virtual balance to what you would really deposit

   A six-figure practice balance is the fastest way to learn habits that will not survive a real account. Reset it in settings to the amount you actually plan to fund, then trade that.

   Pick one trader to copy — on drawdown, not return

   Open the discover tab and sort by risk and maximum drawdown rather than by return. Read the trader's history length: under six months tells you nothing. Then copy them with virtual funds.

   Leave the copy running for at least a month

   This is the whole point of the exercise. A month later, compare your virtual result to the numbers on their profile. Differences come from entry timing and spread, and occasionally you learn that the advertised figures do not survive a real account.

   Place a few manual trades too

   Copying hides how orders work. Open one or two positions yourself with a stop attached, so that if you ever need to intervene in a copied position you are not learning the interface under pressure.

What this demo cannot teach you

A demo is the cheapest tuition available, and it has blind spots that matter. These are the ones specific to eToro:

• Copy performance in the demo will not match the trader's advertised numbers exactly — entry timing and spread differ.
• No MetaTrader, so nothing you learn transfers to an MT4 or MT5 workflow.
• Withdrawal speed. A demo has no cashier, so it cannot tell you how long real money takes to come back.
• Slippage in fast markets. Demo servers usually fill you at the price you clicked; live ones do not, especially around economic releases.
• Your own behaviour under real loss. Virtual money does not produce the impulse to widen a stop or double down, which is what actually empties accounts.

Use the Virtual Portfolio to audit a copy trader, not to feel good

The genuinely valuable use of eToro's demo is as an audit tool. Pick the trader you are seriously considering, copy them with virtual money, and watch what happens through a losing week rather than a winning one. Most people discover one of two things: either the drawdown is deeper than they can emotionally sit through, or the strategy involves averaging down into losers in a way that looks fine on a large account and terrifying scaled to a small one. Both are worth finding out for free.

Real assets versus CFDs, and why the demo blurs it

eToro offers both actual share and crypto ownership and leveraged CFD positions, and in the Virtual Portfolio they feel identical. On a funded account they are not: CFDs carry overnight financing and can be closed out against you, while owned shares do not. Before you switch to real money, check which one each position in your practice portfolio actually was. This is the single most common misunderstanding among new eToro users.

Costs the demo will not make you feel

eToro's spreads are wider than raw-spread brokers, and there is a withdrawal fee and an inactivity fee on live accounts. None of that bites in a virtual portfolio. If cost is your main criterion, the demo is not where you will discover it — compare the fee schedule directly, and look at a raw-spread broker like IC Markets for contrast.
