Best brokers for gold trading (XAU/USD)

Gold moves in dollars per ounce and a standard lot is 100 ounces — so the broker matters less than your position size. These brokers offer gold with a free demo to learn that on.

CFDs are complex instruments with a high risk of losing money rapidly.

Gold is the instrument that flatters beginners in a demo and destroys them live, and the reason is arithmetic rather than analysis. XAU/USD is quoted in dollars per troy ounce, and one standard lot is 100 ounces — so a $1 move in the gold price is $100 on your account, before leverage enters the conversation. Choosing the right broker matters here; choosing the right lot size matters more.

The contract size is the whole lesson

One standard lot of gold is 100 ounces. At a gold price around $2,000, that is a $200,000 notional position. Gold routinely moves $20 to $40 in a day, which is $2,000 to $4,000 per standard lot — on an account that may hold a few hundred dollars. This is why gold accounts for a disproportionate share of blown beginner accounts across every market we cover. Trade 0.01 lots, check the contract specification for your broker's exact size, and calculate the cash value of a typical daily range before you place anything.

Gold costs more to hold than to trade

Spreads on gold are wider than on major currency pairs — often several dollars rather than a fraction of a pip — and they widen sharply around US economic releases, which is exactly when beginners want to trade it. Overnight financing on gold is also heavier than on forex, so a swing position can bleed more to funding than to the market. Open the instrument specification on a demo, read both the long and short swap figures, and multiply by the nights you expect to hold. If you want a swap-free account, check what replaces the charge — usually a fixed daily administration fee after a few days.

You are trading a dollar instrument whatever you deposited

This trips up traders funding in baht, rupiah, rand, naira, dong or Egyptian pounds. Gold is priced in dollars per ounce, so your profit and loss is calculated in dollars and then converted. Two things follow: the currency conversion is a real cost on the way in and the way out, and a move in the dollar itself changes your result even when gold does not move in your favour or against you. Neither of these is visible on a demo account, which is one more reason to test a small live deposit and withdrawal before sizing up.

Spot gold CFDs are not gold

Trading XAU/USD with a broker means trading a contract for difference on the gold price. You do not own metal, there is no delivery, and the position can be closed out against you if margin runs short. That is a legitimate instrument and it is not the same thing as buying physical gold or a gold ETF, which is what many people searching for gold investment actually want. If your goal is to hold gold as a long-term store of value rather than to trade its price over days, a leveraged CFD is the wrong tool.

How we ranked these brokers

All-in cost on gold first, then availability, regulation quality, withdrawal reputation and demo quality. Rankings are editorial, not paid placement. Spreads and swap rates on gold change frequently and differ by account type — confirm on the broker's own instrument page. Leveraged gold trading can lose more than your deposit where negative-balance protection does not apply.

Best brokers for gold trading (XAU/USD): quick answers

Which broker is best for trading gold?
One with a competitive all-in cost on XAU/USD, micro lots so you can size down, and a free demo. The list above is ranked on that basis. Compare the gold spread at the hour you actually trade rather than the advertised average.
How much is one lot of gold?
A standard lot is 100 troy ounces, so at a gold price near $2,000 that is roughly $200,000 of notional exposure and about $100 of profit or loss per $1 move. A micro lot of 0.01 is one ounce. Always check your broker's contract specification, as some differ.
Why is the spread on gold so wide?
Gold is less liquid than major currency pairs and far more volatile, so brokers quote a wider spread to cover the risk. It widens further around US data releases and at the daily rollover. That is normal, and it is why scalping gold is expensive.
Can I practise gold trading on a demo account?
Yes, and you should. Every broker here offers a free demo with live gold prices. Use it specifically to learn what a typical daily range costs at your intended lot size — that single exercise prevents most beginner gold losses.
Is trading gold CFDs the same as buying gold?
No. A CFD is a leveraged contract on the price; you never own metal and there is no delivery. If you want gold as a long-term holding rather than a short-term trade, physical gold or a gold fund is the appropriate instrument.
What leverage should I use on gold?
Far less than the maximum offered. Because a standard lot is 100 ounces, gold is already a large position before leverage. Size from the cash you are willing to lose on one trade and use a position-size calculator rather than the leverage cap.
