What "best" actually means here

Regulation is a floor, not a guarantee. What a real licence buys you is segregated client money, conduct rules with audits behind them, a complaints route that isn't the broker's own support desk, and at some authorities a compensation scheme if the firm fails. What it does not do is protect you from losing money on your own trades.

The detail that matters most is which legal entity will hold your account. Large broker groups run several: the FCA- or ASIC-regulated entity may serve only its home market, while clients elsewhere are onboarded under an offshore subsidiary with far weaker protections and the same brand on the door.

What we weigh

  • The specific authority and licence number covering the entity that takes your deposit
  • Segregated client funds, held separately from the broker's operating money
  • Negative balance protection, so a gap can't leave you owing the broker
  • An escalation route — an ombudsman or the regulator itself — when support won't resolve something

Check these yourself before depositing

  • Look the licence number up on the regulator's own register, typing the regulator's address yourself rather than following a link from the broker.
  • Match the registered company name, domain and contact details exactly — clone firms copy real licence numbers onto lookalike sites.
  • Read the account agreement at signup to see which entity is named; that entity's regulation is what covers you.

The trade-off nobody advertises

Top-tier regulation usually comes with lower leverage caps and stricter onboarding. That's the protection working as designed — if a broker offers you dramatically more leverage than its regulated competitors, ask which entity is actually providing it.
