CFDs are complex instruments with a high risk of losing money rapidly.

MetaTrader 5 is free from every broker that offers it, so the only real decision is which broker to open it with. That question is about the entity holding your money, the all-in cost at your lot size, and whether withdrawals actually work โ€” not about the platform, which is identical everywhere. Every broker below offers MT5 and a free demo.

MT5 vs MT4: the honest comparison

MT5 has 21 timeframes against MT4's 9, a built-in economic calendar, depth of market, stocks and futures alongside forex, and a faster strategy tester. MT4 has the larger third-party ecosystem โ€” more indicators, more expert advisors, and far more tutorials whose screenshots match what you see. They are not compatible: an MT4 EA will not run on MT5. If you are new and trading forex, gold or indices, either platform is fine and the broker matters more. Choose MT5 if you want more markets in one terminal or need its newer automation; stay on MT4 if you depend on a specific tool built for it.

MT5 is a terminal, not a broker

Downloading MT5 from MetaQuotes gives you an empty platform with no tradeable prices. It needs a broker's server address and login before it does anything, which is why 'do I need a broker for MetaTrader 5' is one of the most common questions about it. The answer is yes, always. Anyone selling MT5 as a product, or bundling 'MT5 access' with a paid signals subscription, is selling you something that is free.

What to check on the demo before you fund

Open the demo in the same account type you would actually fund โ€” a raw account and a standard account show completely different spreads, so a demo on the wrong one teaches you the wrong number. Then load the instruments you plan to trade, at the hour you plan to trade, for at least a week. Check the spread at your session rather than the advertised average, look at the swap figures in the instrument specification if you hold overnight, and confirm the mobile app is usable. Set the demo balance to what you will really deposit, not $100,000.

Expert advisors, VPS and entity restrictions

If automated trading is the reason you want MT5, ask the broker two questions in writing before funding: does the entity that will hold my account permit expert advisors, and is VPS hosting available? Some entities restrict automation, some restrict specific strategies like latency arbitrage, and a marketing page that says 'EAs supported' is not a statement about your entity. Test any EA on demo across a losing week, not just a winning backtest.

Best MetaTrader 5 (MT5) brokers: quick answers

Which broker is best for MetaTrader 5?
The platform is identical everywhere, so choose on the things that differ: which entity holds your account, all-in cost at your lot size, and withdrawal reliability. Open demos at two of the brokers above and compare the actual ticket rather than the advertised spread.
Do I need a broker for MetaTrader 5?
Yes. MT5 is only a terminal. Without a broker's server and login it shows no prices and accepts no orders. The broker provides both free when you open a demo or live account.
Is MetaTrader 5 free?
Yes, the platform and the demo account are free from any broker offering it. Your costs on a funded account are the spread, any commission, and overnight financing.
Is MetaTrader 5 beginner friendly?
It is more capable than beginner-friendly. The interface is dense and the defaults assume you know what you want. Most brokers' own apps are gentler for a first week. If you want MT5, learn it on a demo where a mis-clicked order costs nothing.
Can I open an MT5 demo account without depositing?
Yes. Demo accounts use virtual money at live market prices, need no deposit and no card. Some expire after a period of inactivity but can be reopened.
