MT5 is free from the broker, so any Nigerian broker charging you for 'MT5 access' or bundling it with a signals subscription is not selling you a platform. These brokers offer MT5 and accept Nigerian clients, all with a free demo. The platform question is the easy part — the hard part is verifying who holds your money.
Nigeria's SEC and the CBN have warned repeatedly about unlicensed forex and binary-options operations, and MT5 screenshots are the standard prop. A glossy Instagram page showing MT5 profits is not a licence, and neither is a PDF with a regulator logo. Ask which legal entity would hold your account, search that name on the regulator's own register, and read the broker's legal page. If the person onboarding you is a 'manager' in your WhatsApp rather than the broker's own signup form, you are not opening a trading account.
MT5 supports automated trading, which is genuinely useful in Nigeria for a practical reason: an EA or a stop loss sitting on the broker's server keeps working when your power or data does not. The mistake is trading a position size you can only manage while watching the screen. Put a real stop in the market every time rather than planning to close manually, and if you run an EA, ask the broker whether your entity allows it and whether VPS hosting is offered — some entities restrict automation.
Local bank transfer, cards and some Nigerian e-wallets are the usual rails, and a few brokers offer genuine NGN accounts. A USD-only account means you pay the spread on conversion twice, in and out, which often exceeds the trading spread you compared. Withdraw back to the method you deposited with. Test a small deposit and a complete withdrawal before you commit size — romance-scam and signal-group 'brokers' almost never pay out, and a slow ₦10,000 test is the cheapest warning you will ever get.
MT5 has more timeframes, a built-in economic calendar, and stocks and futures on the same platform. MT4 has more third-party indicators and more tutorials that match what you see. If you are trading gold and major pairs, either works. Open a demo on both at a broker that offers both, and keep the one whose charts you can actually read on the device you actually use.
